Hurricane Arthur: An Unforeseen Event

A vacationing guest’s purchase of travel insurance protects a guest’s vacation investment against loss due to a trip cancellation or trip interruption due to unforeseen events. An unforeseen event is any event not anticipated or expected, an event not felt or realized beforehand.
 
Hurricane Arthur’s arrival on the Outer Banks of North Carolina on July 3, 2014 was truly an unforeseen event; interrupting the holiday visit for vacationing guests on Hatteras Island. Just prior to the July 4th fireworks and celebrations Dare County issued a “Mandatory Evacuation” instructing all visitors to leave Hatteras Island  at 5:00 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014. Guests were not allowed to reenter Hatteras Island until Saturday afternoon, July 5, 2014, an unexpected vacation interruption of either 2 or 3 nights, depending upon whether a guest checked in on Saturday or Sunday.
 
Unforeseen event, you bet! I have lived on the beautiful beaches of the Outer Banks for the last 40 summers and in all those many summers we have never experienced a hurricane during the month of July. In fact, hurricane superdramatist Jim Cantore reported that Hurricane Arthur was the earliest hurricane ever to land on the Outer Banks since hurricane recordkeeping began.
 
Assume you rented a vacation home last week for your family and your sibling’s family to enjoy a July 4th reunion vacation. Excluding taxes and other fees, the weekly rental rate was $7,000.00, a prorated nightly cost of $1,000.00. Thursday’s “Mandatory Evacuation” results in a $2,000.00 loss for guests that checked in on Saturday, and a $3,000.00 loss for guests that checked in on Sunday. The cost of travel insurance for this vacation is $483.00. Is it worth it? It is CERTAINLY WORTH IT to those guests that declined the opportunity to purchase travel insurance, they forfeited $2,000.00 - $3,000.00 from their unexpected trip interruption.
 
There are many, many unforeseen events that can cause a vacationing guest to cancel or interrupt their hard earned vacation between the date of reservation/deposit and the date of check out. In addition to unforeseen “Mandatory Evacuations” from hurricanes, 65 percent of all trip cancellation/interruption claims are due to the sickness of a guest, a traveling companion, or a family member, 13 percent of all trip cancellation/interruption claims are due to death and 12 percent of all trip cancellation/interruption claims are due to accidental bodily injury.
 
If an unfortunate unforeseen event causes a vacationing guest’s trip cancellation or trip interruption, the cost of purchasing travel insurance is ALWAYS worth it!
